Which address should receive replies to an email?

From identifies the sender shown to recipients, while Reply-To indicates where a normal reply should be directed when that header is present. They can differ for a legitimate workflow, but the distinction should be clear and should not disguise the sender.

Mail

Choose addresses that match the message purpose

Use a From address recipients recognize and can associate with the organization or service. Replies to a notification-only mailbox may go to a monitored support address through Reply-To, provided recipients know how to get help.

Check domain authentication and provider requirements when using different domains. Sender identity, signing, and policy alignment can affect acceptance, and receiving systems may display mismatched addresses differently.

Test the recipient experience

Send tests to several mail clients and confirm the displayed sender, reply destination, and controls behave as intended. Verify replies reach a monitored inbox and automated messages do not imply a person will answer if no one does.

Document each address's purpose and owner so future template edits do not redirect replies accidentally. Keep both fields truthful and consistent with sender policies.
