Map every legitimate sending source
List marketing platforms, transactional systems, support tools, and third-party senders using your domain. For each source, confirm SPF, DKIM, or both, and identify the domain recipients will evaluate.
SPF alignment uses the envelope sender domain, while DKIM uses the signing domain. A provider may sign with its own domain unless you configure a custom signing domain; consult its instructions before changing DNS.
Roll out DMARC with evidence
Review aggregate reports to discover senders and authentication outcomes before adopting a stricter policy. Reports can reveal forgotten services or forwarding behavior that needs an intentional handling plan.
Change policy gradually and monitor legitimate mail after each step. Keep a verified sending path during DNS propagation, and do not add SPF records blindly: use one SPF policy that covers authorized sources within DNS lookup limits.
