Identify the key and delegation involved
Determine whether the change affects a zone-signing key, key-signing key, or parent-side DS record. Check which system controls each piece and whether the registrar or DNS provider automates any part of the transition.
Confirm current DS and DNSKEY data, signature validity, and TTLs before starting. Do not improvise a manual sequence from generic steps when the provider uses a managed rollover process.
Monitor validation through the transition
Use DNSSEC-aware checks against authoritative servers and multiple validating resolvers to verify the chain before and after each planned phase. Keep the prior key available until the provider’s safe retirement condition is met.
Prepare a recovery path and avoid simultaneous unrelated DNS changes. If validation fails, inspect DS/DNSKEY consistency and the provider’s status before altering more records.
