What happens when a workflow template value is missing?

Workflow templates pass values between steps. When a referenced value is absent, the next step may receive an empty string rather than the data you expected, so inspect the run warnings and trace the value back to its source.

Workflows

Trace the missing value to its source

Open the affected run and find the step warning that identifies a missing template value. Check the input provided to the workflow and the output of the earlier step that should have produced the field. A spelling or path mismatch can make a valid output appear missing, especially when the value is nested inside another object or list.

Confirm that the earlier step actually ran and returned the expected shape. If it produced a different structure, update the template to match the real output or adjust the prior step. Do not assume that a blank value means the source data was intentionally empty; the warning is a signal to verify the mapping.

Validate the mapping with representative input

Use a test run with input that includes the field and a case where it is legitimately absent. Confirm how each downstream step behaves in both cases. If an empty value would cause an unsafe action, add a condition or human review before the affected operation rather than letting the workflow continue silently.

After changing a template, inspect the next run's inputs, outputs, and warnings to confirm the value now travels correctly. Keep field names and expected shapes documented where the workflow is maintained. That makes later edits less likely to break a mapping that used to work.
