How should I test a workflow before enabling its trigger?

A manual run lets you inspect a workflow's behavior while you are present. Testing representative inputs first can expose mapping, branching, or output problems before a schedule, webhook, or mailbox starts it unattended.

Workflows

Prepare a realistic test case

Choose input that resembles what the workflow will receive in normal use, including optional fields and likely edge cases. Verify that each step receives the values you expect and that the output is understandable to the next step. A test with only ideal data may miss problems that occur in ordinary runs.

If the workflow changes data or produces an external effect, use a safe test target or a non-production example where possible. Review the action and its scope before approving it. Keep a note of the expected result so you can compare it with the run instead of relying on memory.

Inspect the run before automating

Open the run panel and examine step inputs, outputs, and any errors. Confirm that branches select the intended path and that later steps do not depend on a value that may be absent. Correct the definition and run it again until the path is clear.

After the manual test succeeds, enable the chosen trigger and monitor its first real run. Automatic starts do not change what the graph does, but they can expose it to inputs you did not include in your test. Keep the workflow easy to pause and review while you build confidence in its behavior.
