Why did a tool return no result when I expected data?

An empty result can mean that the query matched nothing, a filter excluded the item, or the requested source was unavailable. Check the exact target, filters, and tool status before treating an empty response as proof that the data does not exist.

Tools

Distinguish empty from failed

Read the full tool response and its status. A successful query with zero matches is different from a timeout, permission error, or unsupported source, even if each leaves you without visible data.

Recheck identifiers, date ranges, spelling, and scope. Filters that seem harmless can exclude the desired result, and a similarly named workspace or account may contain a different dataset.

Broaden the search carefully

Remove one filter at a time or test a known identifier to find which condition changes the result. Keep the search bounded so a broad query does not expose unrelated data or create an unmanageable output.

If the result remains empty, check whether the data has been indexed, synced, or made available to the connected tool. Report the actual evidence—such as 'no matching rows returned'—rather than concluding that the record cannot exist.
