How should I choose between a preview and a direct tool action?

Use a preview when you need to inspect the proposed changes before they take effect, especially for bulk edits, deletes, or actions that reach external systems. A direct action fits a small, reversible operation whose target and result are already clear.

Assess scope and reversibility

Before execution, identify which records, files, or settings will change and whether the operation can be undone. If the affected set is large, unclear, or costly to reconstruct, inspect a preview or dry run first.

Check whether preview output reflects the same permissions, filters, and conditions as the actual action. A preview that omits a constraint can create false confidence, so verify its scope and note any differences.

Confirm the result after execution

For a direct action, capture the target and expected outcome before running it. Afterward, read the tool’s result and inspect the affected resource rather than assuming that a successful response proves the intended state.

If the tool provides no preview, reduce the action to a small sample or use a safe test resource where possible. Record the decision and any recovery step for operations that cannot be reversed.
