When should I use multipart uploads for large objects?

Multipart upload divides a large object into independently transferred parts that are assembled after successful completion. It is useful when transfers may be interrupted or when a single request would be too large, but it adds lifecycle and cleanup work.

Object Storage

Choose a practical part size

Select part sizes within your storage provider's documented limits and balance request overhead against retry cost. Larger parts reduce the number of requests; smaller parts let a failed portion be retried without resending the entire object.

Use bounded concurrency so several parts can upload at once without saturating the user's connection or exhausting application memory. Keep the part manifest and upload identifier until completion is confirmed.

Complete or abort deliberately

Only assemble the object after every expected part has uploaded and the client has validated the intended object metadata. If a transfer is abandoned, explicitly abort it or configure a lifecycle rule for incomplete uploads where supported.

Treat completion as a state transition: handle retries safely, verify the final object size or checksum when available, and report success only after the storage service confirms assembly. Protect upload credentials and scope them to the intended key and operation.
