How should I decide whether an object should be public or private?

Base access on who needs the object and what it contains. Keep sensitive or internal files restricted, and grant only the access required for the intended use.

Object Storage

Classify the content before sharing

Consider whether the object contains personal information, credentials, internal documents, or data that should reach only a specific person or service. A convenient public link can expose a file beyond its intended audience, so do not use public access as a shortcut for application-to-application reads.

Check the storage connection's access controls and the exact path before sharing. Different objects may have different needs; making an entire bucket or prefix public for one file can expose unrelated content. Keep test artifacts separate from files intended for customers.

Verify access from the reader's perspective

Test with the same kind of identity that is expected to retrieve the object. Confirm that authorized users can read it and that an unauthenticated or unintended reader cannot. A successful upload says nothing by itself about who can access the result.

Review permissions when an object's purpose changes or when sharing ends. Remove access that is no longer needed and check that copies or links are not still available elsewhere. Do not place passwords, tokens, or other secrets in an object that might later be shared.
