How should I choose an encryption key strategy for stored objects?

Choose a key strategy based on who must control access, how keys are rotated, and what recovery obligations apply. Provider-managed encryption can reduce operations, while customer-managed keys add control but make availability and lifecycle management your responsibility.

Compare ownership and access paths

With provider-managed keys, the storage service handles key protection according to its documented model. Customer-managed keys can support separation of duties or revocation, but reads may depend on the key service and its permissions.

Confirm which services, regions, replication paths, and lifecycle operations support the selected key. Encryption that prevents a restore job or cross-region copy from decrypting objects can undermine availability.

Plan rotation and recovery together

Learn whether rotation re-encrypts existing objects or affects only new writes, and how old key versions remain available for decryption. Document ownership, access roles, audits, and replacement or disable procedures.

Test reads, restores, replication, and revocation in a non-production scope. Keep independent recovery material where policy permits, and do not delete an old key until dependent objects and backups have been accounted for.
