How do I design safe object storage lifecycle rules?

Lifecycle rules can lower storage costs by moving objects to less expensive classes or expiring them, but a broad rule can remove data users still need. Base the policy on documented retention requirements and test it on a narrow scope before applying it widely.

Object Storage

Map objects to their purpose

Separate temporary files, reproducible outputs, user records, and objects subject to retention. Confirm an owner and retention period for each class before automating transitions or deletion.

Include versioning and replicas in the review. Expiring a current object may leave older versions behind; deleting those versions could remove the only recovery path. Check the storage provider’s behavior for your actual configuration.

Roll out with observable checks

Preview the rule against representative object names and ages. Start with a limited prefix or test bucket when possible, then monitor transition counts, expiration events, and storage totals before expanding.

Record the rule’s purpose, owner, and expected effect. Revisit it when product retention, obligations, or backup design changes, and verify that recovery expectations still hold.
