How can I restore one object version without changing other files?

When versioning is supported and enabled, restoring a specific object usually means copying or promoting that version as the current object. Confirm the provider's exact operation and retention rules so you do not replace neighboring keys or remove versions needed for recovery.

Identify the exact key and version

Use the complete object key and version identifier from the storage inventory or event record. Similar filenames, prefixes, and URL-encoded characters can make a near match look correct while targeting a different object.

Inspect the selected version's size, timestamp, and metadata before restoring. If the current object was changed by a lifecycle rule or delete marker, understand whether the restore operation creates a new version or modifies the existing history.

Restore and verify the result

Prefer a documented copy-to-current or recovery action that preserves the old version when possible. Check destination encryption, access policy, content type, and metadata because a byte-identical object can still behave differently if its headers change.

Read the restored object and compare checksum or other integrity evidence, then verify consumers can access it. Record the operator, version, and recovery time, and retain the prior current version until the result is confirmed.
