Does object storage create folders when I save a file?

Object storage usually identifies objects with keys that can contain path-like prefixes. A folder view may represent those keys rather than separate directories that must be created first.

Object Storage

Treat the full key as the object's address

Choose a key with a meaningful prefix and filename, then use that exact key when reading the object later. Similar prefixes group related objects in many interfaces, but the folder appearance does not mean the storage system has ordinary filesystem directories.

Be consistent about separators, spelling, and capitalization. Depending on the storage system, reports/june.csv and Reports/June.csv may be separate keys. A missing prefix or extra separator can also place an object somewhere unexpected.

Plan listing and cleanup

If a workflow needs to find related objects, choose a predictable prefix and use the listing operation supported by the configured connection. Verify the exact key returned after saving instead of relying only on a visual folder browser.

Before cleanup, filter by the intended prefix and confirm the objects before deleting them. A broad prefix can match more files than expected. Establish naming rules and avoid credentials or personal data in object keys, since keys may appear in logs and listings.
