How should I manage environment variables across deployments?

Treat environment variables as release configuration with clear ownership, scope, and validation. Keep secrets out of source control, distinguish build-time values from runtime values, and ensure each environment receives the settings required by the deployed version.

Separate environments and variable lifetimes

Use distinct values for local development, preview or staging, and production so a test deployment cannot accidentally connect to live services. Document which values are public configuration and which grant access to protected systems.

Some frameworks embed public or build-time variables into generated assets, while server-only runtime variables may be read when a process starts. Confirm platform and framework behavior before changing a value that requires a rebuild or restart.

Validate before sending traffic

Maintain a checklist of required names and safe validation rules such as presence, format, and allowed values, without printing secret contents. Fail deployment clearly when a required variable is missing rather than letting a later request break.

Rotate credentials through the supported secret manager and update dependent services in a controlled order. After deployment, verify the intended environment and watch for authentication errors; never expose secrets in logs or client-side bundles.
