How can I reduce noisy alerts for a hosted application?

An alert is useful when it signals a condition someone can act on, such as sustained failures or exhausted capacity. Alerts that fire for expected, brief variation can hide real incidents, so tune them using service objectives and observed baselines rather than removing them without review.

Define actionable thresholds

Alert on user-impacting symptoms or a meaningful risk to recovery, not every isolated error. Use a duration or rate threshold to distinguish a short spike from a persistent problem, while keeping urgent failure signals fast.

Group related symptoms and include context such as service, environment, release, and a link to the relevant dashboard or runbook. Avoid sending the same incident through many independent alerts.

Review alert performance

Track how often alerts are actionable, missed, duplicated, or acknowledged too late. Adjust thresholds after workload or architecture changes and verify that alerts still detect known failure scenarios.

Assign an owner and response expectation to each alert. Retire obsolete alerts only after confirming no runbook, compliance process, or dependent team still relies on them.
