How do I plan a database backup restore test?

A backup is useful only if it can be restored within the service’s recovery window. Test the full process in an isolated environment, including access, credentials, schema compatibility, and checks that reflect real application use.

Set recovery expectations

Document how much recent data may be lost and how quickly service must return. Those limits guide backup frequency, retention, and the order of recovery steps. Choose a representative backup, restore it away from production, and record the elapsed time.

Confirm that the restored data matches application expectations before treating the drill as successful. A database process starting does not prove that users can complete their work.

Verify and improve the procedure

Run application checks for authentication, key reads and writes, indexes, and background jobs. Capture failures and identify whether they came from stale instructions, missing credentials, network restrictions, or incompatible schema changes.

Assign owners to each correction and repeat after material infrastructure or schema changes. Keep the recovery instructions accessible to responders, and update the measured recovery time whenever the process changes.
