# When should I use a condition or a switch in a workflow?
Branching lets a workflow respond differently to its inputs. Choosing the right control keeps the graph readable and makes it clear why a particular path ran.

## Use a condition for a binary choice
A condition evaluates a comparison and routes the run along a true or false path. It is a good fit when one test determines whether the next action should happen, such as whether a field is present or a value meets a threshold. Keep the comparison explicit and make both outcomes understandable.
Plan what should happen on each side before connecting more steps. A false path should not be left ambiguous if the run can continue in either direction. Test both outcomes with representative values so you know that the condition sends each case to the intended next step.
## Use a switch for several cases
A switch is more suitable when one value can correspond to several named cases, with a default path for anything that does not match. This can be clearer than stacking many conditions that repeatedly inspect the same field. Make the cases distinct and include a deliberate default behavior.
Check the value entering the branch and ensure it uses the expected format and spelling. Then test a value for each case and one that should use the default. If the branches later converge, make the shared step explicit so the workflow remains easy to follow as it grows. [← Back to Workflows FAQs](https://help.iagenify.com/faqs/workflows)
