# What should I check before retrying a failed workflow step?
A failed workflow run can often be inspected and retried from a chosen step. Before doing so, determine whether earlier steps already changed data or triggered an external action.

## Read the run details first
Open the run and identify the step marked as failed, along with its error, input, output, and warnings. Confirm that the workflow definition and the data supplied to the step are still the ones you intended. A failure caused by a missing field needs a different correction from one caused by an unavailable connection or an invalid operation.
Check the earlier completed steps as well. A previous step may already have created a record, sent a message, or changed a remote system before a later step failed. If you retry without checking those effects, the workflow may repeat an action that was already completed.
## Retry only when repetition is safe
Correct the cause you found, then use the run's retry option at the failed step when the workflow supports it. Earlier completed steps are retained; the selected step and later work continue from the run state. Review the new attempt in the run history so you can see what changed and whether the failure is resolved.
For workflows that create records or send requests, design steps so a repeated attempt can be recognized or checked before creating a duplicate. When you cannot establish whether an external effect happened, inspect that destination first or ask an administrator before retrying. A retry is a new execution attempt, not an automatic rollback of prior side effects. [← Back to Workflows FAQs](https://help.iagenify.com/faqs/workflows)
