# What happens when a step fails?
A failed step leaves earlier outputs available and marks where the run stopped.

## What this means in practice
Open that step’s inputs and error, correct the cause, then retry it from the run panel.
You do not need to rebuild the earlier work just to continue past the failure.
## Practical guidance
A failed step marks the point where a run could not continue. Outputs from earlier successful steps remain available, so the run history can show both what worked and what needs attention. Open the failed step to inspect its inputs and error; this often reveals whether the issue came from missing data, an unexpected value, or the operation itself.
Correct the cause before retrying. If an upstream input was wrong, update the relevant step or source; if the input was valid, adjust the failed operation. Then retry from the run panel and confirm that later steps receive the expected output. Reusing successful earlier results avoids repeating completed work and makes the run history a useful record of how the problem was resolved.
