# What can start a workflow?
A workflow can start from a person, a scheduled time, an incoming webhook, or a new message in a mailbox.

## What this means in practice
Pick the trigger that matches the event that should begin the work; the workflow graph then runs the same sequence regardless of how it started.
## Practical guidance
A trigger determines when a workflow begins; the graph determines what it does after that. You can start a run yourself, let a schedule start it, accept an incoming webhook, or react to a message arriving in a mailbox. These entry points make the same sequence useful for both planned work and events that happen while you are away.
Choose the trigger by identifying the event that should start the process. Use a schedule for recurring work, a webhook when another system signals an event, and a mailbox trigger when a received message is the input. Keep the graph itself explicit about what should happen with that input. Before relying on an automatic trigger, run the workflow manually with representative data and inspect its steps so that the unattended path is clear.
