# Can I test one workflow step without changing an existing run?
Testing a step in isolation can help you check its configuration before changing a complete workflow run. You can provide input directly or use context from a prior run, then inspect the step's output and error details.

## Prepare a representative step test
Choose a step whose behavior you want to inspect and provide the inputs it normally receives. If it depends on an earlier output, supply the relevant prior run context or a representative value. This helps distinguish a step configuration issue from a missing or differently shaped upstream result.
A single-step execution is useful for ordinary executable steps, but it does not stand in for a full run. Branch conditions, waiting for a person, and later connections may behave differently when the entire workflow executes. A human approval step is not independently executable; it needs a waiting run and a person-provided response.
## Use the result to refine the workflow
Review the step's status, output, warnings, and error if one is returned. Compare the output shape with what downstream templates expect, including nested fields and values that may be absent. If the step succeeds in isolation but the workflow fails, inspect the full run for input differences, branch selection, or connections between steps.
Because the isolated execution does not modify the saved run, you can use it to diagnose behavior without replacing that run's history. It also does not guarantee that an external side effect is harmless; a step that sends a request or writes data may still perform that action during the test. Use a safe test destination when possible and inspect the result at its destination. [← Back to Workflows FAQs](https://help.iagenify.com/faqs/workflows)
