# Can a mail-triggered workflow respond to its own outgoing email?
No. A mail trigger starts a workflow when a matching message arrives in the configured mailbox. Messages sent by the account do not trigger it, which prevents an automated reply from immediately starting the same workflow again.

## Incoming mail supplies the workflow input
A mail trigger can target a mailbox and optionally filter on sender, subject, or unread status. The arriving message becomes the run input, including its sender address, subject, text, message identifier, and attachment information. Use these fields in templates to route or process the message.
The trigger is designed for incoming messages. Sending a reply from the account does not count as a new incoming message and does not start another run. This prevents a basic automation loop in which the workflow replies and then reacts to its own reply, creating repeated work or costs.
## Design a safe response flow
If the workflow should reply, add a mail step after the incoming message has been reviewed or processed. Include a human approval step when the reply sends information externally, spends credits, or could have an impact that needs confirmation. Keep the sender and subject context available for the reply step.
Test the workflow with a non-sensitive incoming email and inspect its run history. Confirm that one incoming message creates the expected run, that filters behave as intended, and that the sent response does not create a second run. Avoid broad filters that could process unrelated messages or expose their contents to the wrong recipient. [← Back to Workflows FAQs](https://help.iagenify.com/faqs/workflows)
