# Why can't the conversion tool identify my file format?
The converter infers the source format from the file name or URL extension. If the extension is missing, misleading, or hidden behind a download page, provide a direct file source with a clear extension.

## Check the source the tool receives
For a workspace file, confirm that the path points to the actual file and that its name ends in the correct extension, such as `.docx` or `.png`. A file named `report` gives the converter less information than `report.pdf`. The extension should describe the file's real format, not merely the format you want to produce.
For a URL, use a direct link to the file. A link that opens a login screen, preview page, or expiring redirect may not reveal a usable file name or content to the converter. If the download URL has no extension, download the file into the workspace with a descriptive name and pass that path instead.
## Choose a supported target and inspect the result
Set the requested output format explicitly and make sure it is compatible with the source. Renaming a file does not change its contents; changing `.txt` to `.pdf`, for example, does not convert it. The conversion request must perform the transformation and return an output file.
After conversion, check the generated file's name, type, and contents before sharing or replacing the source. If a correctly named supported file still fails, keep the sanitized error and the source and target formats for troubleshooting. Avoid repeatedly submitting the same inaccessible URL, since each conversion request consumes a credit. [← Back to Tools FAQs](https://help.iagenify.com/faqs/tools)
