# Why can a tool fail even when its input looks correct?
A valid-looking input can still fail because the target is unavailable, permissions differ, a required field is missing, or the value has the wrong shape. Read the exact error, confirm the tool's documented input, and verify the target resource before retrying.

## Check the contract and the target
A tool expects specific field names and types; a human-readable value may not match that contract. Compare the request with the tool description and inspect whether a path, identifier, enum, or nested object must use a precise form.
Then confirm the target exists in the current workspace or account and that the current permissions allow the operation. Similar names across projects are easy to confuse, so check the full location rather than relying on a label alone.
## Use the error to narrow the cause
Separate validation errors from permission failures, missing resources, and service outages. Fix one cause at a time and keep the original input so you can compare the successful and failed attempts.
Avoid repeated retries when the action can create or change external data. If the error leaves the outcome uncertain, inspect the resource state first; retry only after confirming whether the first attempt took effect. [← Back to Tools FAQs](https://help.iagenify.com/faqs/tools)
