# Why can a fetched webpage look different from its search result?
Search results are short previews, while fetching reads a page separately. The page may have changed, require sign-in, or show different content to automated requests.

## Treat the preview as a clue, not the page itself
A search result can be generated from an earlier crawl or a short excerpt selected by the search engine. The fetched page is retrieved at a different time and may have a new title, updated text, moved content, or a redirect. A mismatch does not by itself mean either tool failed.
Some sites present different content depending on authentication, location, cookies, or how the request is made. A fetch may return a sign-in screen, an access notice, or only the public portion. Do not infer the contents hidden behind a login from the search snippet.
## Verify the exact material you plan to use
Check that the final page address and heading match the source you intended to open. If the page is unavailable or incomplete, search for the document title on the publisher's site, try another public copy, or use a directly accessible authoritative source. Record the page date and access limitation when they matter.
When the distinction affects a decision, compare the search excerpt with the retrieved text and explain which one supports the claim. Do not cite a preview as if you read the full article. If both differ materially, describe that uncertainty rather than silently choosing whichever wording is more convenient. [← Back to Tools FAQs](https://help.iagenify.com/faqs/tools)
