# Where do the file tools run?

## What this means in practice
A computer session works with that computer’s files; a phone session works with that phone’s files.
This keeps local file access local instead of uploading a copy for the tool to inspect.
## Practical guidance
Local file tools operate in the SDK session on the device where that session runs. A computer session can work with files available to that computer; a phone session works with files available on that phone. The important distinction is the execution location: the platform does not first copy a local file to its servers simply so the tool can read it.
Before asking the agent to work on a file, make sure you are using the device and session that can access it. If the file is on another device, it will not appear merely because you opened the same account there. Choose the specific file and describe the intended operation, especially when the task could alter its contents. This helps keep local work understandable and scoped to the right device.
