# How should I handle a tool response that is incomplete or truncated?
A truncated response is not a complete result, even if its visible portion looks plausible. Check for an explicit truncation flag, continuation token, output limit, or omitted field marker, then retrieve the missing portion or narrow the request before making decisions from it.

## Detect missing output
Inspect response metadata and tool documentation for limits, warnings, and pagination behavior. Do not assume that a syntactically valid JSON fragment or a successful status means every requested record was returned.
If output is cut due to size, ask for a specific range, page, field subset, or summary with verifiable totals. Keep stable identifiers so the retrieved chunks can be joined without losing or duplicating entries.
## Confirm the assembled result
Validate counts, required fields, and boundaries between chunks. For a list, compare page cursors and totals when supplied; for text, confirm that the continuation starts and ends at the intended positions.
Keep the original partial response marked as incomplete rather than silently treating it as authoritative. If a complete result cannot be retrieved, state the limit and avoid claims that depend on unseen data. [← Back to Tools FAQs](https://help.iagenify.com/faqs/tools)
