# How can I tell whether a tool changed the right file?
Verify the exact path and inspect the relevant before-and-after content or diff. A successful tool response shows that an operation ran; it does not by itself prove that it targeted the intended copy or preserved unrelated work.

## Confirm the target before editing
Check the workspace root, full path, and filename before applying a change. Projects often contain generated copies, localized variants, or similarly named files, so a short path alone may not identify the intended source.
For edits, review the diff around the changed lines and nearby context. Confirm that the requested behavior changed and that adjacent functions, translations, or formatting were not unintentionally removed.
## Verify the saved result
After the operation, read the file again or inspect it through the tool that consumes it. For a configuration change, confirm the effective value; for a data update, confirm the specific record or output that should reflect it.
If the result is important, run the narrowest relevant check and report what it proves. Keep a recoverable diff or backup when the workflow supports it, and avoid claiming success based only on a tool's completion message. [← Back to Tools FAQs](https://help.iagenify.com/faqs/tools)
