# How can I preview a destructive command before running it?
Use a documented dry-run or preview mode when available, and inspect the exact targets and actions it reports. A preview reduces risk but is only reliable if it uses the same filters, permissions, and input as the real operation.

## Constrain the command before previewing
Specify the intended directory, resource identifiers, and scope explicitly rather than relying on a broad wildcard. Check how the tool resolves relative paths and whether symlinks, hidden files, or recursive options expand the target set.
Read the preview output for both inclusions and exclusions, and confirm counts against the expected range. If the operation affects remote resources, ensure the preview uses the correct account, project, and region.
## Execute with a recovery plan
When possible, test on a small disposable sample or make a backup before applying the full change. Keep the exact command and preview output so the final action can be compared with what you reviewed.
After execution, verify the resulting state and retain logs or a manifest of affected items. If a tool has no preview mode, use a read-only listing or query to establish targets before authorizing a destructive action. [← Back to Tools FAQs](https://help.iagenify.com/faqs/tools)
