# Does a failed file conversion still use a credit?
The conversion tool is charged as one credit per request, including requests that fail. Check the input format and file access before retrying so you do not repeat the same unsuccessful attempt.

## Check input and conversion requirements
Confirm that the source is available to the tool and that the selected input and output formats are supported for the content you have. A file extension alone may not identify its true format, and a URL may point to a sign-in page or an expired resource rather than the file itself.
For text or encoded content, verify that the value is complete and not truncated. Use a small representative sample when possible, and read the specific conversion error before changing settings. If the failure indicates an unsupported or malformed input, repeating the identical request is unlikely to produce a different result.
## Retry only after changing the cause
If the first request fails, inspect the error and correct the input, access, or format choice that caused it. The conversion attempt is still counted, so check that the next request tests a meaningful change rather than simply repeating the same call.
Keep an original copy of important source files and verify the converted output before replacing or sharing the source. If repeated failures occur despite a supported input, retain the sanitized error and conversion details for support; do not include private file contents unless they are needed and approved.
