# What is the difference between object content and object metadata?
Object content is the stored byte sequence; metadata describes how the object should be identified or interpreted, such as its content type. Changing metadata does not necessarily change the bytes, and replacing content can require updating metadata to match the new file.

## Content holds the file data
The object body contains the actual text or binary payload. For binary uploads, preserve the original bytes through the supported encoding path; for text, use the text field intended by the storage interface.
Metadata accompanies the object and may inform previews, downloads, indexing, or application logic. Common examples include a media type and application-defined labels, subject to the capabilities and rules of the storage service.
## Keep descriptions accurate and safe
Set the content type to the actual format rather than guessing from a filename. A mismatch can cause browsers or downstream consumers to handle valid bytes incorrectly, while missing descriptive metadata can make later discovery harder.
Do not put secrets or personal details in metadata that may be exposed through listings or APIs. When replacing an object, verify both the new content and its metadata, then confirm the application points to the intended key.
