# Should I store a file in object storage or in a database?
Files and structured application data have different shapes. Separating their responsibilities can make a system easier to query, maintain, and explain to the people who build on it.

## Match the storage to the data
Object storage is suited to file-like content such as images, documents, exports, and other binary assets. A database is better suited to structured fields that an application filters, joins, validates, or updates as records. Putting an entire large file into an ordinary record can make queries and changes harder to manage.
The two can work together: keep the file in object storage and store a reference plus useful metadata in the database. That metadata might describe the owner, purpose, content type, or relationship to another record, depending on your application. Avoid storing duplicate file contents in both places unless you have a specific reason and a plan to keep copies consistent.
## Design the reference and access path
Choose a stable identifier for the object and save that reference alongside the related database record. Decide how the application will retrieve the file and who is allowed to do so. A reference by itself is not an access policy; avoid exposing private object locations in public pages or logs without reviewing the intended access behavior.
Plan what should happen when a file or its database record is removed or replaced. Define which component owns cleanup and how you will detect a reference that no longer points to an available object. Testing the full create, read, update, and delete path with a sample file helps reveal gaps before real users depend on it.
