# How should I choose a storage class for an object?
Storage classes trade retrieval speed and access patterns against storage cost and retrieval or transition charges. The available classes and their exact terms depend on the storage provider, so base the choice on measured access frequency, recovery needs, and the documented pricing and minimum-retention rules.

## Classify how the object is used
Frequently read application assets usually need immediate access, while older archives may tolerate a delay before retrieval. Separate active, infrequently used, and archival data by a clear policy rather than moving objects based only on age.
Consider more than read frequency: some classes have minimum billable durations, request costs, or restore steps. A rarely read object that must be available instantly may not belong in a delayed-access tier.
## Review transitions and recovery
If lifecycle rules move objects between classes, verify the timing and whether a transition can be reversed without extra work or charges. Keep application code aware of any restore state required before it can serve an archived object.
Estimate the full cost using expected storage duration, request volume, retrieval volume, and transition behavior. Check the provider's current terms and test a representative restore before applying the policy broadly. [← Back to Object Storage FAQs](https://help.iagenify.com/faqs/object-storage)
