# How can I delete an object without removing the wrong file?
Verify the bucket and full object key before deletion, then confirm that the key maps to the intended application record. Use a preview or list step where available, and keep a recoverable copy when the data is important.

## Identify the exact object
Object keys can look similar, especially when they include user names, dates, or version suffixes. Compare the full key and bucket with the record that references the file rather than relying on a shortened display name.
Check whether the key is shared by multiple records or environments. Deleting a shared object can break every reference to it, even when the deletion was triggered from one item.
## Plan for recovery and cleanup
If the storage system supports versioning or a recoverable deletion state, understand its retention and restore behavior before relying on it. Otherwise, download or copy critical data before removal and verify that the backup can be read.
After deletion, confirm the intended object is absent and that unrelated objects remain available. Update application metadata or links consistently, and avoid broad prefix deletions unless the exact affected set has been reviewed.
