# Should I create a mailbox or forward mail to another address?
A mailbox stores messages for someone to manage; a forwarder routes incoming mail elsewhere. Choose based on whether the address needs its own inbox and sending identity.

## Choose how the address should work
Create a mailbox when a person or team needs a dedicated place to read and manage messages. It can provide a stable account identity for sign-in and replies, depending on the available settings. A shared role address also needs clear ownership and access rules.
Use forwarding when an address should deliver incoming mail to an existing inbox without creating another place to manage. Confirm the destination and decide whether a copy should remain at the original address. Forwarding is a routing choice and may not provide its own login or inbox.
## Test delivery and reply behavior
Send a message from an external account and confirm which destination receives it. Check spam and filtering rules if it does not appear, and make sure the destination address is correct. A test from the same domain may not reflect how outside mail is handled.
Decide how replies should appear before publishing the address. A forwarder does not automatically make replies come from the forwarding address. If users must send as that identity, verify the corresponding mailbox or authorized sending configuration and test the visible From address.
