# How should I choose a canonical URL for my hosted site?
Choose one public hostname and protocol as the canonical address, then redirect alternate forms consistently when your hosting setup supports it. Keep internal links, metadata, and sitemap entries aligned with that address.

## Select the preferred host and protocol
A site may be reachable through www and the root domain, or through both HTTP and HTTPS. Serving the same content at multiple addresses can confuse visitors and search engines, so decide which form is primary.
Ensure the preferred hostname is configured and covered by a valid certificate before redirecting other names. Redirect rules should preserve paths and query parameters when those remain meaningful, and should avoid loops between hostnames.
## Apply the choice across the site
Use the canonical URL consistently in navigation, structured metadata, and sitemap output. Check language-specific pages and any links produced by email or workflows so they lead to the intended public address.
Test every alternate hostname and protocol, including nested paths and not-found pages. Confirm redirects land on the right page in one predictable sequence and update external DNS or integrations if they still use an old address. [← Back to Hosting FAQs](https://help.iagenify.com/faqs/hosting)
