# Which DNS records should I copy before changing a domain’s nameservers?
Nameserver changes move DNS authority to another provider and can affect every record that has not been recreated there. Inventory current records, prepare the new zone, and plan the change so mail, verification, and website services continue resolving.

## Inventory the active DNS zone
Record the existing A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, and other service records, including priorities and TTLs. Check for less visible records used by email authentication, subdomains, certificate validation, and third-party integrations.
Confirm the new provider is authoritative and that its zone contains the required records before changing delegation. A zone that is empty or missing mail records can make the website or email appear broken as caches update.
## Coordinate the cutover and verify it
Lowering TTLs in advance can shorten some cache windows, but resolvers may retain cached delegation for their own periods. Avoid assuming every user will see the new answers immediately after the registrar accepts the change.
After the update, query the new nameservers and test the actual website, mail delivery, and verification flows. Keep the prior zone available during propagation so you can compare answers and restore records if something was omitted. [← Back to Domains FAQs](https://help.iagenify.com/faqs/domains)
