# Why can a database connection succeed while the first query fails?
A saved connection and a working database session are different checkpoints. Use the first read or write to validate the actual target and access, then diagnose the specific failure without exposing credentials.

## Know what the connection check proves
A successful setup call can mean that the application stored a connection configuration, not that it opened a live session or ran a query. Some connection strings are not contacted until the first operation. A delayed error can therefore appear during a read, insert, or update even though the earlier setup step looked successful.
Treat setup and query execution as separate checkpoints. Confirm that the expected connection name is selected, that the application is using the latest saved URI, and that the requested database is named in that URI or selected by the client. A valid server address with a missing database name can still point the first operation at the wrong target.
## Diagnose the first operation safely
Run a small, read-only query against the intended database, then inspect the exact error category. Authentication failures call for checking the username and secret; network or host errors call for checking the address and access path; permission errors call for reviewing the database user's grants. Do not paste a full connection URI into a ticket or log because it can contain credentials.
After correcting the configuration, repeat the same minimal query before retrying a write or a workflow that changes data. If setup reports success but every query fails, capture the operation name, timestamp, sanitized error, and selected database so support can distinguish a saved configuration from an established session.
