# How can I keep an agent focused on a long task?
Give the agent a clear outcome, the relevant project context, and checkpoints that make progress visible. Long tasks are easier to complete when the agent can verify each stage and preserve decisions instead of repeatedly rediscovering them.

## Define a finish line and useful checkpoints
Describe the deliverable in observable terms: which pages, files, or records should exist and what must be true when the work is done. Separate required outcomes from optional improvements so limited time does not get spent on polish before the core result is complete.
For work that spans several areas, identify natural milestones such as inventory, implementation, and review. A checkpoint should confirm a real artifact or decision, not merely report that time has passed.
## Keep context durable and reviewable
Ask for concise notes on decisions, assumptions, completed items, and unresolved questions. Those notes let the agent resume after interruption without treating an earlier plan as proof that a change was actually made.
At each milestone, compare the result with the original request and check for omissions. If scope changes, update the finish line explicitly; otherwise the agent may keep expanding adjacent work while the requested deliverable remains incomplete.
