# How can I check whether an agent’s answer is grounded in sources?
Ask the agent to connect each important claim to material it actually inspected, such as a file, record, or user-provided instruction. A useful explanation distinguishes direct evidence from inference and marks gaps instead of filling them with confident guesses.

## Trace claims to evidence
For decisions that affect behavior, scope, cost, or compatibility, look for the exact source and the relevant passage or observed result. A citation should make it possible to verify the claim without searching the entire workspace again.
Treat summaries as navigation aids, not proof by themselves. If the supporting material is ambiguous, outdated, or inconsistent with another source, the answer should describe that uncertainty and explain how it affects the conclusion.
## Review what remains uncertain
Ask which parts of the answer are inferred and what evidence would change the interpretation. This reveals whether the agent is relying on a confirmed requirement, a reasonable working assumption, or an unsupported premise.
When a claim cannot be traced, request a narrower answer or a check against the original source. Keep the resulting correction in the artifact so later readers do not repeat the same unsupported statement. [← Back to Agent FAQs](https://help.iagenify.com/faqs/agent)
