# Can I stop an agent while it is still working?
Stopping a run prevents the agent from continuing its planned work, but it is not always an instantaneous interruption. Review completed steps and possible side effects before deciding what to do next.

## Stop the run with the right control
If you are using the agent API, the run can receive an abort signal, and the agent exposes a stop operation for the current run. Use the control that matches how your application starts and manages the work. A cooperative stop asks the agent to halt; it should not be treated as if it reversed a file change or external request that already occurred.
If the agent is waiting for a person or a tool call, the run may stop at a different point than expected. Keep the run identifier and inspect its recorded status rather than assuming that a button click or cancellation request completed immediately. For time-sensitive work, avoid starting a second run until you know whether the first one is still active.
## Inspect what completed before resuming
After requesting a stop, review the final run status and the steps recorded before it ended. Check whether a tool had already written a file, sent a request, or produced an output that a later process could consume. Treat those effects as completed unless you verify otherwise at their destination.
Before resuming the task, summarize which actions are complete and what remains. This reduces duplicate changes and gives the next run a clear starting point. If the partial work is not safe to continue, restore or clean it up deliberately before launching another attempt. [← Back to Agent FAQs](https://help.iagenify.com/faqs/agent)
