# Can I change the model?
Model routing is handled as part of the request, rather than requiring you to pick the same model for every task.

## What this means in practice
The agent considers task complexity and the capabilities needed.
Describe the work and its requirements clearly; those are the signals that guide the choice.
A short, self-contained request may need a different balance of speed and capability from a multi-step analysis or a task involving several kinds of input.
Routing lets the agent account for that difference as it works.
You can focus on explaining the outcome you need instead of trying to map every request to a model name in advance.
For better results, include the context that changes the shape of the work: the material to examine, the level of detail expected, any constraints, and what a useful final answer should contain.
Vague prompts leave more room for interpretation; clear requirements make it easier to match the work to the capabilities it calls for.
Model routing does not replace a good brief.
It helps select an appropriate capability for the request, while your instructions still define the goal, scope, and standard for the result.
If a response misses the mark, refine those requirements and ask again with the missing context.
This is usually more useful than naming a model without explaining what the task needs.
